URBAN LEAGUE OF SPRINGFIELD CELEBRATES
105th Anniversary Dinner with Ruth Carter
Springfield, Massachusetts – The Urban League of Springfield, Inc., will celebrate its 105th year anniversary with their annual dinner on Tuesday, March 27, at the MassMutual Center downtown Springfield, MA. The social hour will begin at 5:30 PM with dinner promptly at 6:30 PM. This year’s theme for the Urban League’s 105th Anniversary is: “Celebrating Black Women of Excellence”.
President and CEO of the Urban League of Springfield, Henry M. Thomas III, announced today that this year the organization will highlight (16) sixteen Black Women of Excellence, who have made outstanding achievements and contributions locally, nationally and internationally! Thomas stated, “the women selected are women who thrive in the private and public sectors representing different disciplines from finance, banking, community engagement, education, health & wellness, arts and culture, law, city government and more. The Honorees represent a high standard of excellence in both their professional careers, and in their commitment to community betterment.” This year, the Urban League is proud to have among the distinguished Black Women of Excellence, Ruth E. Carter, one of Hollywood’s most sought after costume designers and the first African-American costume designer to be nominated for an Academy Award.
Carter, is a 1982 graduate of Hampton University’s Department of Fine and Performing Arts, majored in Theatre Arts and has worked in the entertainment industry for over thirty years. Carter is known for her research and diligence to the craft, specifically for her outstanding work in period ensemble films, such as: “The Butler”, “Selma”, “Roots”, and her most recent success, “Black Panther”.
Carter is a native of Springfield, MA, and graduated from Technical High School and did an apprenticeship at Stage West in Springfield.
