TIPS ON DRESSING FOR

THE HOLIDAYS

By Matoaca Hardy-Martin

Before I start talking fashion and trends, I first want to congratulate everyone who voted for Barack Obama last month. Whether you were voting for the first time or have always been politically active, I just want to say, “Thank you!”

Now, back to business. As Christmas and New Year approach, so do the holiday cheer parties and celebrations. From your in-laws to church to the office and the club, how can you transform your look from one party to the next and have a smooth transition so that you are wearing the appropriate attire to each affair? You certainly don’t want to be the center of workplace gossip when your girls show up before you do.

First, know where you are going. Church and the club are two different places and have different purposes, at least they should, but that may not always be the case. But whatever your intentions may be, you can’t wear the same outfit to both places, and, believe me, I have seen people try — men included. Leave your pimp suits for the Cabaret!

The next step: Know your body type first, then your size. Your body type means your shape. Are you top heavy and smaller on the bottom or the reverse, smaller on top and have the motherland on the bottom? Some of us are tall and slender without all the “gifts” while others of us are greatly blessed.  Don’t be afraid to look at yourself naked in the mirror and be honest with what you see. You are beautiful no matter what your shape is. It’s yours, so own it and if you don’t like what you see, work towards a change. But until then, claim it and love it and you will discover others will love it too.

Once you claim and own your body shape, then you can play with sizes. All garments are not made for all body types. Something may come in your size, but that doesn’t mean it matches the shape of your body. Garments should be worn to compliment the areas that you want accentuated and conceal what you want hidden. If you are constantly adjusting your clothes once they are on, it’s probably not a good fit. Once you’re dressed, you’re dressed. All that tugging and pulling while you are out will make you look and feel uncomfortable. You shouldn’t be worrying if everything that is supposed to be covered is covered!

The Key to looking good is a smooth, sexy silhouette, no matter what size you are. Since none of us are perfect, there is something called undergarments that can work wonders when worn properly.  Whether you are a sister that is greatly blessed with gifts or you just have a few you’re holding on to, you want to make sure everything is in place and stays in place. Body shapers (aka girdles) work wonders on tucking everything in and there is nothing wrong with wearing a thong or stockings with a lining when wearing fitted garments. Visible panty lines and seams are tacky and make outfits look cheap; this should be avoided at all cost.

Last, double check yourself in a full length mirror in a well lit room. Remember, while you are out this month, it’s about comfort, class, and smooth contours. You always want to look and feel your best. So go ahead and end this year feeling fabulous. There is much to look forward to in ’09. We have Obama in office! God willing, I’ll see you then. Happy New Year and God Bless!  n
