TIME TO RE-EVALUATE YOURSELF

By Matoaca Hardy-Martin

Hello, family! I know I have been gone for a while, but it feels good to be back.

As some of you may have been doing, I had to make some changes in my life. Have you ever gotten the feeling that you know you should be doing something else with your life, should be and can be doing better? I was so focused and distracted by what everyone else was doing; feeling the pressures of trying to “keep up” with the status of my peers, I failed to realize the skills that I needed to become successful I already possessed. Instead of going with the natural flow of myself and my God-given talents, I was too focused on exploring new talents that were not necessarily for me. I had to learn that just because you are good at something or love doing something, it does not necessarily mean that is your calling.

When following your dreams and finding out who you are, it takes more than knowing what you are good at doing. For example, I am good at many things. Everything from cooking for my family to catering a large event, I can do. I love fashion and can sketch a couture gown in minutes. I can tell you the blend of a fabric without even touching it. I plan all kinds of events from weddings to talent shows, parties to art and fashion showcases. However, because I can cook, and, I do mean I can cook, that does not make me a master chef. Just because I studied fashion and textiles, that does not make me a couture designer. These are just hobbies that I can find peace and solace in while possibly helping others.

To discover what I truly wanted to do in life, find out who I really am, what my calling is, I had to step back and step aside. Let God guide me to where He wanted me to be, not where I wanted to go. Then I let go and let my natural self take charge. It was not easy, but I know it is worth it. While I am still a work-in-progress, the pressures that were there are no longer there. I live and work for today. I am not worried about what is going to happen tomorrow, and I do not care about what happened yesterday. Because when tomorrow comes, it is today, and yesterday can no longer be changed, so learn from whatever mistakes were made and live for today.

I challenge you to re-evaluate yourself. Think about where you are at this moment in your life. Are you where you want to be in your career, in your relationships with family members, your children or with your significant other? When you look in the mirror, are you happy with what you see? Are you spiritually and mentality satisfied? If you answered no to any of these questions, focus on getting where you want to be today. Yesterday does not matter, so today, take the necessary steps to get to where you want to be in all aspects of your life. Search deep down within you, stop ignoring that small voice telling you it is time to leave and start living for you. Take the necessary steps to find your true happiness. n
