just wanted to say thank you so much for the
article in the June issue of Point of View.
(“Life of Voting Rights Activist to be Brought to
the Stage – Maybe”) I must say I was expecting just
a very small blurb because I know your space is
limited. Given that, the space you were able to
allot for The Fannie Lou Hamer Theater Project was
absolutely fantastic! You got the basic information
in, and I also appreciate that you were able to
include the photo — which is framed very nicely, by
the way. Thank you again for the space.
FYI, I enjoyed reading the entire issue of POV,
as always. I was especially moved by Mary E.
Bogert’s piece on “Unforgettable Character.” Like
many, I would think, it made me think of people in
my own life who might have seemed rather peripheral
at the time but who, in hindsight, really helped
shape my growing-up years.
Other June issue standouts for me: “Casi No,”
“Remembering My Mom and Pop,” and “The Biblical
Moses and the Painful Risk of Writing,” and “From
Victim to Victory!”
Regarding the latter, Marjorie, I’m sure you’ve
gotten many, many comments by now that assure you
that your wonderful article did not suffer at all
because of a small error. Allow me one more
empathetic comment. As a journalist myself, I’ve
lost track of the times I’ve read one of my printed
articles and have been dismayed by what was staring
back at me. Whether it was my own mistake (a
misspelled word or inaccurate fact, for example) or
an error inserted by an editor (referring to a
Muslim leader as “Iman” instead of “Imam,” for
example), it still stings. Of course we want to get
it right — that’s our job. But we also have to
realize that, as your husband so eloquently states,
what we do can at times be a “painful risk.” We must
take the risk, no matter what. To stop taking risks
is to stop writing. And that, we cannot do.
At any rate, wonderful article, and wonderful
newspaper. Thank you and your editorial team for
your great work!
And thanks again for including the information about
“Fannie Lou.”
All the best,
Felicia Hunter
