John M. Coleman, Assistant Superintendent School Operations and Support Systems

Degrees:  B.S.--Morgan State College; M.Ed.--American International College; C.A.G.S-- American International College.  Began working for the SPS as a teacher in 1971.  Has held the following positions:  Teacher, Director of Summer School, Assistant Principal, Principal

Educational Philosophy:  Education that is non existent is counterfeit and is a betrayal of a truly democratic society whose existence depends on a meaningful education.

Goal for 2003-2004 School Year:  To work with the Superintendent to use school improvement planning process and leadership development to improve all schools, to work to improve attendance at the secondary level, to continue to work with Step Up Springfield in an effort to focus on proficiency for all students and to continue to work on the development of the elementary report card

Mary Elizabeth Beach, Special Assistant to the Superintendent for Accountability and Evaluation

Degrees:  B.S.--Lynden State College; M.Ed.--University of Vermont; Ed.D.--University of Vermont

Began working for the SPS in this position in 2002.

Educational Philosophy:  My educational philosophy centers on my belief that all children are able to be successful and it is the adults who must offer nurturing, guidance and relevant instructional opportunities to make this happen. 

Goal for 2003-2004 School Year:  To increase public accountability through all aspects of my work with grants and data with a goal to increase student achievement.

Emurriel H. Holloway, Director of Guidance, District Section 504 Coordinator, District Manager of Service Team Initiative

Began working for the SPS as a teacher in 1966.  Has held the following positions:  Teacher, Guidance Counselor, Supervisor of Guidance

Educational Philosophy;  Regardless of how the students come to you, it's what we do with them that matters. 

Goal for 2003-2004:  To complete the Counseling Program Self-Study Review and to move along the implementation of a Comprehensive Developmental Model for School Counseling in the system

Beverly A.Brown,  Principal of Milton Bradley Elementary School

Began working for the SPS as a teacher in 1969.  Has held the following positions:  Elementary School Teacher, Acting Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Schools.

Educational Philosophy:  All students must become literate life-long learners and responsible citizens.

Goal for 2003-2004 School Year:  To work to fully implement the Culture of Achievement, our School Improvement Plan, and the various other district plans

Celeste T. Budd-Jackson,  Principal of Springfield Central High School

Began working for the SPS as a teacher in 1972.  Has held the following positions:  High School Teacher, Counselor, Assistant Principal

Educational Philosophy:  I believe that all children can learn if provided with a safe, positive and challenging environment.   

Goal for 2003-2004 School Year:  To increase MCAS scores and graduation rates, respond to the accreditation recommendations of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, use the Principals of Learning to improve instruction and continue to mentor new and aspiring principals

Althea H. Clement,  Principal of Warner Elementary School

Educational Philosophy:  In whatever I do children are first; they are my number one priority and investment and it is my belief that all children can and will learn if they are given the support, services and encouragement needed to succeed.

Goal for 2003-2004 School Year:  To improve academic achievement through alignment of classroom activities to district plans, Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, effective leadership and the use of date to inform instruction.

Anthony C. Hill, Principal of Liberty Street Elementary School

Educational Philosophy:  I believe that it is the role of educators to positively transform ALL the lives of the children who come to our schools everyday.

Goal for 2003-2004 School Year:  To have a rigorous yet exciting environment for students to learn and for teachers to teach. I want to focus on the academic, social and emotional needs of the children and motivate and inspire the staff so that true learning takes place.

Kevin McCaskill, Principal of William N. DeBerry Elementary School

Francine Pina-Council,  Principal of Sumner Avenue Elementary School

Educational Philosophy:  It is my philosophy to first treat people the way you want to be treated, then make sure they have what they need in order to be successful.

Goal for 2003-2004 School Year:  To continue to build a culture of achievement by focusing on those students who are having learning difficulties (through assessment of MCAS scores) and giving them what they need (through reinforcement, tutoring, mentoring) in order to show improvement.

Bobbie L. Rennix, Principal of Homer Street Elementary School

Educational Philosophy:  I believe that education is the rock upon which the house of success is built; therefore every child should be afforded a quality education under equitable conditions.

Goal for 2003-2004 School Year:  To advance all students toward proficiency via continued implementation of Project Jumpstart/Long Jump, an intensive intervention program involving problem identification, assessments, data analysis, consultation and interventions

Gloria B.  Williams, Principal of Frank H. Freedman Elementary School

Began working for SPS as a teacher in 1977.  Has held the following positions:  Reading/Language Arts Enrichment Teacher, Math Enrichment Teacher, Elementary School Teacher

Educational Philosophy:  I believe that all students must be respected and regarded as important individuals who must receive a quality education and it is important that all educational leaders--parents, administrators, teachers and community members--share in the responsibility of providing children with opportunities to engage in consequential learning endeavors that will prepare them to make a positive difference in this world while enjoying fulfilling life experiences.

Goal for 2003-2004 School Year:  As an educational leader, I will continue to strive to improve the educational environment and successes of our students.  I intend to campaign for the rights of our “under represented” youth to receive the respect and the kind of instruction that will eliminate the so-called “achievement gap” that exists between African-American and White students.

Linda C. Wilson, Principal of Balliet Elementary School

Began working for the SPS as a teacher in 1986.  Has held the following positions:  Elementary School Science Resource Teacher and she also served as President of the Springfield Education Association.

Educational Philosophy:  I believe in providing excellent educational opportunities for all students that serve as a foundation for future success in their academic careers.

Goal for 2003-2004 School Year:  To increase the percentage of students that score at the proficient and advanced levels on the MCAS test and to continue to provide a safe, motivating learning environment.
