LIBRARIES ARE COLOR BLIND

By Elizabeth Cardona

Libraries have always been an important part of my life.  Even at a very young age, I zealously utilized my neighborhood library to obtain books and resources that were not available to me at home.  So it has been especially gratifying for me to have had the good fortune to work as the Family Literacy Outreach Worker for the Springfield City Library since April of this year.

While conducting outreach I have shared with others my own personal stories and the challenges I have endured.  Whether it was the books, the videos, the reference materials, the newspapers, the websites, or the databases that are available at the library, at some point, each has helped to enhance my life.  Because of my own personal experiences, I have been able to more effectively market the variety of services that the library offers, such as basic computer classes for adults, reading programs for children, and the teen club.

As a single parent, I am aware of the time constraints that may thwart many from visiting the library.  However, when selecting your activities this summer, you should consider the benefits that such a visit will give you and your family.  Most services, including borrowing items such as books, DVD’s, videos, and attending classes, are free to residents who possess a library card.  I can assure you that if you become familiar with your library, you, too, will find it a valuable asset.

This summer I will continue to do outreach for the library at several events, including the Puerto Rican Festival being held from July 30-August 1 in downtown Springfield.  I also will be visiting various childcare centers throughout the city.  Later in the summer, the Springfield Library will be sponsoring the Eastfield Mall’s Children’s Summer Theater event on Saturday, August 21 from 9:30 AM-12:30 PM. “Two” High Energy Jugglers will provide entertainment.  As part of this event, a table will be available for library card registration and to provide informational literature about the library.

Make the library one of your summer destinations and experience for yourself all of its many treasures.  You won’t be disappointed n
