HAPPY NEW YEAR

This writer is chairperson of the Mason Square Volunteers.  Joyce Wilson, secretary, Attorney Wayman Lee, coordinator, Samuel Bolden, Robert Clark, Dora Robinson, Elizabeth and John Bullock, Helen Caulton-Harris, Jorge Costellano and Patricia Brown and many volunteers worked very hard to make the annual Seniors Thanksgiving Dinner a wonderful day for everyone.

Massachusetts Career Development Institute Director, James Morton, and some of his dedicated staff gave of their valuable time to cook 21 turkeys, 100 pounds of ham, 150 pounds of mashed potatoes and gallons of delicious gravy to be served with green beans, buttered corn, salad, rolls, coffee, tea, punch and pie or cake.  There was a team of volunteers working in the kitchen preparing dinners to go.  There was music played by John Bullock, director of the Loose Caboose Band and music by Light Ministries with Joseph Wilson on saxophone and Craig Opal on drums.  Our guests, who, of course, were served on the best china and used the best silverware, seemed to enjoy their dinner.

The Jewish Community Center sponsored a Chanukah Latke Party in honor of some “nifty ninety” year olds.  Among the honorees from the Mason Square area were Edyth Artis, Howard Edmonds, Elizabeth Bobbitt, Cleotha Lyon and this writer, Ruth B. Loving.  The event was filled with memories, laughter and good food and we all were given a gift bag.  Ms. Bobbie Levin and her committee are to be commended.  The seniors and their family members who attended had a delightful time.

I was pleased to see Rev. Howard-John Wesley from St. John’s Congregational Church with some of the honorees.  My escorts for the event were Mr. E. Henry and Karen Twiggs and Ethel Hudson.  Mrs. Hudson directed members of the Freedom Choir and the audience in singing “Row, Row, Row Your Boat.”

December has gone and whether your Christmas lists were short or very long, they are now just a memory among your happy thoughts.  With a new year to plan for, we are hoping for the good and praying to live with these bad times.  And to all of the staff of An Afro-American Point of View, Happy New Year!  n
