JUNIOR
ACHIEVEMENT INTRODUCES ITS "URBAN INITIATIVE PROJECT" WITH AN INITIAL
PROGRAM AT ROBERT M. HUGHES ACADEMY CHARTER SCHOOL
Junior
Achievement of Western Massachusetts recently announced that it is piloting an
intensive, whole school program at Robert M. Hughes Academy Charter School in
Springfield, working with urban students to inspire them to achieve
academically, stay in school and to become future entrepreneurs.
Donald Wesson, President of Junior
Achievement ("JA") and Douglas Greer, Principal of Robert M. Hughes
Academy met in December 2005 and JA programs will be implemented in grades K-8
and the after-school program. Leon
Cosby, a local entrepreneur and a parent of four children at Hughes is
currently teaching JA Economics for Success and JA's new after-school
program, JA Dollars & $ense. Asked
why he volunteers with JA, Leon said, "When I help a child see their
potential, I help a child see a future of possibilities. JA programs help me make a difference."
JA programs are provided a no cost to the students or schools. Funding for JA programs comes from the generosity of local corporations, individuals, and foundations through JA's special events, such as their annual JA Bowl-A-Thon, scheduled for March 2006. Funding for the JA Dollars & $ense program Mr. Cosby is teaching is provided by a grant from the JC Penney After-School Foundation. n
