On Being a Volunteer Soccer Coach,
Are You Interested?

—By David Kelley—
After being cooped up all winter, it will be nice to get back to grass stains and opening the car windows to evacuate the stench of winter season. You soccer moms know what I am talking about. That spring sun beating down, while the fresh air carries in the aroma of new life. Cheering for your team and there goes little Billy in for a slide tackle. Yup, that will be a tough stain to get out. For the soccer player, it is all about getting back to the open field with your teammates and having fun. Spring soccer is such a fantastic way to shake away cabin fever. It takes me back to my childhood as a player. Transitioning from practices all winter in the middle school gym to that beautiful lined green field. I personally loved putting on my outdoor boots and feeling them dig into the soil beneath. Spring does that to me. I love reminiscing about my years playing youth soccer. The joy and excitement it brought knowing I would be out there with my friends playing the sport that I lived for. Now, as a coach, I never want to lose sight of that feeling―knowing that how I teach and represent the game to the players I coach will impact how they view the game in their adult years.
As I am writing this, it is hard not to get sentimental when soccer has played such a major part in my life. My hopes are for every child we coach within Springfield FC to have a positive experience. When they reach their adult years they can think back about their time playing youth soccer and reflect on the impact soccer played in their life. What a positive snowball effect it would be for that experience to play out in their children and, if they coach, other children’s lives. That is why we look for coaches who are likeminded and have bought into this philosophy. From our start in 2013, we have grown as a club and are looking for volunteer coaches who not only love the game, but share in the vision of what we are looking to accomplish through our programs.
Coaching is a position of leadership. The ability to share your experience and skills with an impressionable player is priceless. Players look for guidance not only in increasing their skill and knowledge of the game, but also in their everyday life. Reflecting on the coaches that I have had, I can say there were two that made a direct impact on my life. Playing for many years, I did come across those “win at all cost” coaches. You know the ones. In reality, they are not coaches in the true definition. That being said, there were still lessons learned from those situations. Nevertheless, I believe coaches are to be positive developers of people and assist those under their servitude in how to navigate life both on and off the field.
If you are interested in coaching for a fantastic organization or just want to gain a better understanding as to what SFC is all about, we would love to hear from you.  ■
