BACPS students are doing their part to make a better world and need your support!
Springfield, MA, May 5th, 2021: Community service is an important element of learning at Baystate Academy Charter Public School. Whether donating goods, delivering services, or raising awareness, students at Baystate Academy are encouraged to be active participants and leaders in solving the issues of today.
Centered on EL Education’s “Better World Day” initiative, staff and students worked to identify a pressing issue in the area that could be addressed safely by our school community. Shoes are one of the most needed items for people facing economic hardship. Through discussions with students, families and staff, Baystate Academy has committed to collect and donate shoes for children and adults in need.
“We see this shoe drive as a teachable moment for all of us at Baystate Academy,” says Ms. Joretha Lewis, Principal of the school. “We thought about the the needs of our community during the pandemic, and we saw that clothing is a high priority item for many families. Students and staff did their homework and found out that while lots of people have been donating clothes during the pandemic, there was still a high need for shoes. Since we are dedicated to empowering our students to be inspired leaders in the community, we felt it was important to address this need especially during this uncertain time. Our students inspire us every day and we hope the community will support them in this important work.”
The school has set a goal to collect 100 pairs of shoes by May 14th to donate to Square One and Dress for Success in Springfield and are inviting community members to join this effort.
Contributions of gently used or new shoes of all types and sizes can be delivered to the school by May 14th. Donations can be dropped off at any time between 8am and 3pm. Please call the school for more information or to get involved with our community giving programs.
