Magic at the Museums

February 18-22, 2019

Eric Benton presents Clever Nonsense

Springfield (MA)—There’s mischief afoot at the Springfield Museums during School Vacation Week, February 18-22. Magic is the theme for a week filled with a special magical performance each day and a series of hands-on activities daily in the galleries. Enjoy strolling magic in the galleries, try your hand at a variety of magic tricks, pop into our wizard photo booth, make your own potion and more.

“Magic is a natural way to celebrate school vacation!” said Jenny Powers, Family Engagement Coordinator at the Springfield Museums. “Whether we’re wondering about the amazing adaptations animals use to survive in the Science Museum or marveling at the creative works by artists in the D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts, we’re surrounded by real-life magic every day at Springfield Museums! Plus with Dinosaur Discoveries, Toytopia, and a different theatrical magic show every day of the week, we have something for every member of the family.”

All activities are free with museum admission!

12:00-4:00 Make Your Own Potion – Follow a scavenger hunt through the 2nd floor of the GWVS Art Museum to “collect” magical ingredients to create your own potion in the Art Discovery Center.

11:00-3:00 Wizard’s Photo Booth – Whether you’re a first-year student or the leader of a fellowship, grab a cloak, a wand, cauldron, and an owl puppet to take a selfie.  Share on social media using #AtTheMuseums.

11:00-3:00 Colorful, Magical Creatures Wildlife coloration and markings relate to the specific habitat of each animal. Colors can help animals survive by concealing them, helping them blend into the background, stand out as a warning, or mimic another species. Some even change color seasonally or when they are attracting a mate. Compare and contrast brightly colored animals and animals that camouflage, then create your own magical bird, reptile, fish, insect, amphibian, or mammal and describe how its colors help it survive and thrive.
